Here it is: our pictures from Buckskin Gulch. It's probably the worlds longest slot canyon. It is located about 45 miles east of Kanab, UT (right on the Utah-Arizona border). We went with Jenny and Daniel Thornton (Brian's sister and brother-in-law) and with thier friends Jenny and Matt Graham.
Start of day one of our hike through Buckskin Gulch. 20.6 miles to go!
Marisa, Daniel, and Jenny
Jenny walking through a cess pool. (Pools of stagnant water.) We walked through like fifteen of these. The deepest was just below our waists! Our shoes sometimes got really muddy. Oh yeah, they also smelled like poo.
A HUGE scorpion that we found in Brian's hair.
A rattlesnake (Man, you wouldn't believe the stuff that gets stuck in Brian's hair).
Our campsite. See the pack hanging in the tree (behind the tent). We put it there to keep the mice out of our food, but it turns out that the little kangaroo mice that they have in Buckskin Gulch are really good at climbing trees. So all night we could hear mice running around on and in our packs and chewing through zipock bags of Cheez-Its. We tried to keep them away by spraying our packs with Deet (mosquito repellant) but after that didn't work we just gave up and let them crawl all over our packs and eat our food. We found one inside Marisa's pack muching merrily on her lunch for the next day.
The walls of the canyon were over 200 feet high in some places.
The last five miles weren't exactly a slot canyon, but it sure was beautiful.
